A note on terminology: when we started swing dancing in 1995, there were distinctly two different kinds of lindy hop: Hollywood Style (also called smooth style) and Savoy Style. Savoy Style is what was started on the east coast in Harlem, primarily by black people. On the west coast Hollywood Style became famous, mostly by white people. The styles look very different from one another when danced true to form. Since the early to mid 1990s, however, the swing dance scene has changed. Younger professional lindy hoppers now seem to prefer to not label their style as either Hollywood or Savoy, and from what we see it often is difficult to label since they dance a dance that has a style with a mixture of the styles and moves from the historic dance. There's is a dance that is truly from the late twentieth-century or early twenty-first century resurgance of swing dancing. In addition, dancers have branched out from only lindy hop and include balboa, shag and moves from other historic dances as well.
